Winter MAP Testing- Grade 5

Hawthorn will conduct limited MAP testing for students in grade 5 and grade 8. The testing window is from December 2 through December 20.
As background, MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) is an assessment tool created by educators for educators to provide detailed, actionable data about where each child is on their unique learning path. Because student engagement is essential to any testing experience, NWEA (MAP’s developer) works with educators to create test items that interest children and help to capture detail about what they know and what they’re ready to learn. It’s information teachers can use in the classroom to help every child, every day.
The MAP assessment is unique in that it adapts to a student’s responses as they take the test. Answer a question correctly and the test presents a more challenging item. Miss a question, and MAP offers a simpler item. In this way, the test narrows in on a student’s learning level, engaging them with content that allows them to succeed.
MAP is not a test for which students can (or should) study. Students should also keep in mind that by design, the test will push the student into content that they may have never encountered. This is a normal part of the “narrowing in” process. So while we encourage students to always do their best, we also remind them that they aren’t expected to know all of the answers.
The best preparation for MAP day (and any day) is to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and get to school on time.
