Townline Holds a Book Tasting

Third-grade  classrooms at Townline Elementary attended a tasting event last week. But rather than tasting food, the students tasted a wide variety of books. The goal was for students to sample different genres (such as science fiction, biography, and fantasy) they were less familiar with to expand their reading horizons. Cook Memorial Public Library, Aspen Drive Library and Townline Elementary’s library provided the books. Students moved from one station to the next, learning about the genres from staff and volunteers.

Take the 5Essentials Parent Survey

Students, parents and teachers across Illinois have an opportunity to participate in the seventh annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey between now and Feb. 15.  The survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your student’s school and gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes. Additionally, Hawthorn District 73 has chosen to provide the optional Parent Supplemental survey. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your student’s school and guide improvement. To take the survey, please visit the 5Essentials Survey webpage and select the appropriate survey to begin.

Gallery Walk Explores Diverse Traditions

In Mrs. Hughes’ second grade social studies class, students drew pictures related to their cultures and traditions. Next, the students went on a “gallery walk” to view everyone’s drawings. Students discussed what they had seen. Many noted the similarities and differences between the cultural backgrounds of everyone in the class.
