Teamwork to Help the Needy

About 45 Townline Elementary teachers, staff and their families packed food at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville on Tuesday evening. Working in teams, they measured amounts and assembled packages to help the needy in distant countries around the world.

Spelling Bee Tests Students’ Skills

At Friday’s spelling bee at Townline Elementary, 12 fourth and fifth grade students carefully spelled tricky words such as sniffle, scattering and generation. By the twelfth round, they were down to two students. Prarthana S. won by spelling the word “assembly” correctly. The runner up was Rithvika S. Congratulations to all the students. It was clear that they all studied hard. Prarthana will go on to represent her school at the sectional competition in Deerfield in February.

A Letter from Dr. Haack

Happy New Year Townline families,

I hope you had an enjoyable winter break with family and friends.  Here are a few updates!

Mid Year Benchmark Assessments

It is the time of year where students participate in mid year benchmark assessments.  Kindergarten and 1st grade students will be benchmarked during the next two weeks using FASTBridge in both reading and math.  2nd-5th grade students will be taking the winter NWEA MAP assessment Monday, January 13 and Wednesday, January 15. Please help your child by ensuring they get plenty of sleep and a healthy breakfast.

Early Release

Thursday, January 16 is an early release day.  Students will be dismissed at 12:20pm. If there are any changes to your child’s transportation schedule due to the early release, please contact our office at 847.990.4901 or send a note with your child.

Winter Weather

It has finally snowed!  In order for students to play in the snow during recess, they must wear a coat, boots, a hat, gloves and snow pants.  If students do not have all of these items, they will be limited to the blacktop area. Additionally, please label all items that may be easily lost!  This will help with the return of items to their owner.

Kids Heart Challenge

Your child will be starting a jump rope unit in their physical education classes on February 3, 2020. In conjunction with this jump rope unit, we will be participating in a fundraiser called the “Kids Heart Challenge” benefiting the American Heart Association. All students will be jumping rope during gym class, but it is voluntary to collect donations for the American Heart Association. Throughout the school year, we discuss keeping our heart and body healthy through exercise and diet. This exciting school-based project stimulates your son’s/daughter’s interest in physical activity and exercise, while supporting the fundraising efforts of the American Heart Association.

All participants returning their donations will receive prizes based on the total amount of pledges turned in by February 7th, which is the last day of the Kids Heart Challenge event. The prizes are the American Heart Association’s way of saying “thank you” to the participants.  If you have questions about this unit or fundraiser, please contact your child’s PE teacher.

Here’s your child’s chance to be a star! The Hawthorn PTO Variety Show is a talent show comprised of dancing, singing, playing musical instruments, gymnastics routines, comedy routines, magic,  and much more. The sky’s the limit! Students collecting items for food drive

Food Drive Gives Back to the Community

Fourth and fifth grade students who volunteered to be part of the Project Change program enjoyed the opportunity to give back to the community. Early in the morning of December 5, approximately 50 students went from floor to floor at Townline and the School of Dual Language, collecting boxes of nonperishable food items and supplies, such as toothpaste and pancake mix, from approximately 38 classrooms. They piled the items into a truck bound for the Sharing Hands Food Pantry. The items will go to community members in need. Many thanks to all the families at both schools that provided items for the food drive, which began in mid-November.

A Letter from Dr. Haack

Be Seen and Be Heard parent presentation

The parent information night for the Be Seen and Be Heard program is Monday, December 2nd at 6:30 p.m. at Aspen School.  If you are interested in learning more about the program and what your child will experience, please attend this parent night.

Yearbooks

Our first round of yearbook sales is this week, December 2-December 6.  The cost of the yearbook is $14.00. Cash or check (made out to Hawthorn School District 73) can be turned into your child’s teacher this week.  If you send payment with your child, please clearly mark that the money is for the yearbook. Yearbooks will be distributed to those who order at the end of the year. If you have questions about the yearbook, please contact our yearbook teacher sponsor, Miss Peterson at petersonk@hawthorn73.org.

Morning Drop-off

We have noticed an increase of parents who are getting out of their vehicle in the morning drop-off line.  In order to keep the line flowing, we ask that anyone who would like to help their child out of the car or walk their child to the door/sidewalk, please park in an available parking spot and walk their child across to the sidewalk.  This will help to keep the line flowing. Thank you for your help with this.

5 Essentials Parent Survey

Townline wants your feedback.  We are asking that you complete the 5Essentials Survey which is a 10-minute comprehensive, evidence-based tool designed to drive improvement in schools. This system, which includes a diagnostic survey, scoring, reporting, and training, is an x-ray for schools and districts that identifies areas of strength and opportunities for growth.

Along with the 5Essential Survey for parents, there will be a version of 5Essentials that will also be provided to our teachers and some of our students. The results of this survey as well as other data points, such as student academic progress, school environment, student and teacher demographics, attendance records, etc. will be compiled to provide a full and well-rounded picture of our school.  These data points will also contribute, in part, on our school designation. Just as a reminder, this school year, our school was designated as a Tier 2 “Commendable” school. We will always be striving to be a Tier 1 “Exemplary” school. The survey will be open until February 14, 2020. In order to receive complete results, we need a minimum of 20% participation from our families, therefore, we would greatly appreciate you giving your time to complete the survey. If you have a few minutes before or after your child’s conference, a QR code will be available outside of your child’s classroom that will link you to the survey.  We will also have computers set up for parents to take the survey while they visit the school during conferences.

If you would like to take the survey now, please follow these steps:

a.    Visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/ and select Parent Survey.

b.    Select the necessary language to complete the survey (English or Spanish)

c.   Enter email address* (optional), county of your child’s school (Lake), and school name (Hawthorn Townline).

d.     Advance to survey questions**

f.      Click Submit Survey.

*You will have the option to leave your email address so that you can receive confirmation of taking the survey.  The text box can be left blank if you do not want to wish to leave your email address.

**You may skip any questions you do not wish to answer, but you must click ‘Submit Survey’ at the end in order for your responses to be recorded.

If you have questions regarding this survey, please feel free to contact me at 847.990.4911 or haackj@hawthorn73.org.

Dr. Jennifer Haack

Students in habitats

Students Learn About Animal Habitats through Habitat Extravaganza

Habitat Extravaganza was a great success for the second graders at Townline Elementary.  What a great turnout of parents! Guests enjoyed entering three habitats: Mrs. Sabin’s room was the ocean habitat,  Mrs. Hughes’ room was the grasslands, and Mrs. Bolender’s room was the tropical rainforest.  Students made animal masks and read their scripts (on the back of their masks) to parents as they walked past.  Their scripts described how the habitats met the needs of their animals, fun facts about their animals, and fun facts about their habitats.  Students helped to decorate their rooms to show their unique habitat environments.  Before the parents arrived, all three classes toured each other’s habitat.  They then came back to their rooms to reflect on the different habitats and their unique climate, plants, and animals.  The classes discussed the diversity of animals in each habitat and how each habitat meets the needs of its animals.
