A Scientific Challenge

About 74 Townline Elementary School students in Grades 4 and 5 are testing powders, studying rocks and minerals, and conducting a variety of other scientific tests in preparation for the upcoming Science Olympiad competition.

Students challenge themselves to design the sleekest paper airplane model that will land closest to a targeted zone. Students will design cars out of a collection of materials with the objective to make their vehicle roll the furthest down a ramp.

In all, there are seven competition categories that test students’ knowledge of geology, chemistry, weather, physics and aerodynamics. Students will compete against other schools on Saturday, May 6 in Arlington Heights. A school sponsored Science Olympiad evening will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 2.

“The Science Olympiad is a great way for our students to have a choice in becoming experts in one area,” said Principal Victoria Kieffer.  “Students have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in science and compete against each other in fun competitive events.  It’s all about teamwork, collaboration and learning new science concepts.  My hope is that students learn to love science and get interested in participating in future science events,” Dr. Kieffer said.
