Choral Production Schedule Change to Thursday, Dec 12.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Choral Production has been canceled for December 10th and re-scheduled to Thursday evening December 12 at 7 PM.

Breakfast now available for students

Eating breakfast is important for everyone, but is especially so for children. Our food service Sodexo, provides a daily breakfast with a variety of foods including fresh fruit, low fat milk, 100% juice and a well balanced nutritious list of healthy grain items.
There is always one or two hot item breakfast choice options. Students are allowed to come to the cafeteria before school and enjoy a healthy breakfast. It is clear that there are many benefits to a healthy breakfast, not only does it give you energy to start a new day, but it can make a positive difference in a child’s performance and enhance their learning.
Parents can register at http://www.lunchprepay.com to monitor their child’s meal information. Students will use their school IDs for breakfast and lunch purchases.

Winter MAP Testing- Grade 5

Hawthorn will conduct limited MAP testing for students in grade 5 and grade 8. The testing window is from December 2 through December 20.
As background, MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) is an assessment tool created by educators for educators to provide detailed, actionable data about where each child is on their unique learning path. Because student engagement is essential to any testing experience, NWEA (MAP’s developer) works with educators to create test items that interest children and help to capture detail about what they know and what they’re ready to learn. It’s information teachers can use in the classroom to help every child, every day.
The MAP assessment is unique in that it adapts to a student’s responses as they take the test. Answer a question correctly and the test presents a more challenging item. Miss a question, and MAP offers a simpler item. In this way, the test narrows in on a student’s learning level, engaging them with content that allows them to succeed.
MAP is not a test for which students can (or should) study. Students should also keep in mind that by design, the test will push the student into content that they may have never encountered. This is a normal part of the “narrowing in” process. So while we encourage students to always do their best, we also remind them that they aren’t expected to know all of the answers.
The best preparation for MAP day (and any day) is to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and get to school on time.
